LEVLEN  ED ® 

(Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol )

 

Description

Each cycle of Levlen ED contains 21 light-orange Levlen tablets and 7 pink inert tablets. Each Levlen tablet contains 0.15mg of levonorgestrel and 0.03mg of ethinyl estradiol.

The chemical name for Levonorgestrel is d(-)-13 beta-rthyl-17-alpha-rthinyl-17-beta-hydroxygon-4-en-3-one, a totally synthetic progestogen.

The chemical name for Ethinyl Estradiol is 19-nor-17 alpha-pregna-1,3,5 (10)-trien-20-yne-3,17-diol. Their structures are:

 

Clinical Pharmacology

Combination oral contraceptive act by suppression of gonadotropina. Although the primary mechanism of this action is inhibition of ovulation, other alteration include changes in the cervical mucus.

Indications and Usage

Oral contraceptives are indicated for prevention of pregnancy in women who select this product as a method of contraception.

Contraindications

Levlen ED should not be used in women with the following conditions;

Thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders;

A past history of deep vein thromboemophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders;

Cerebral-vascular or coronary diseases;

Known or suspected carcinoma of the breast;

Carcinoma of the endometrium or other known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia;

Undiagnosed abnormal genital breeding;

Cholestatic jaundice of the pregnancy or jaundice with prior pill use;

Hepatic adenomas or carcinomas;

Known or suspected pregnancy.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Levlen ED (28) tablets is one light orange tablet daily for 21 concecutive days per menstrual cycle, followed by 7 pink inert tablets, according to the prescribed schedule.
